What else do I need to be aware of after getting new brake pads?

Apr 15, 2025

Brake pads are consumables and will gradually wear out during use. They must be replaced when they are worn to the limit position, otherwise they will reduce the effectiveness of braking and even cause safety hazards.

Brake pads are generally checked every 5,000 kilometers, if you find the friction block loss of less than 1 mm when you need to replace. (Generally speaking, replace them once every 30-40,000 kilometers). And new brake pads also need to go through a certain break-in period, so that the contact area between the brake pads and the brake disc increases, in order to effectively maximize its braking effect.

How to break in new brake pads?
Normally, new brake pads need to be broken in for 200 kilometers to achieve the best braking effect, therefore, it is recommended that vehicles with new brake pads should be driven with caution.

Specific methods:
1. After completing the installation, find a place with good road conditions and fewer cars to start breaking in.

2. Accelerate the car to 100 kilometers per hour.

3. Apply the brakes lightly and brake with medium force to bring the car down to about 10-20 kilometers/hour speed.

4. Release the brakes and drive for a few kilometers to cool down the brake pads a little.

5. Repeat steps 2-4 above at least 10 times.

Caution:

1. In each 100 to 10-20km/h braking, not strictly required each time you need to be very accurate speed, accelerate to about 100km/h can start this brake cycle.

2. When you brake to 10-20km / h, there is no need to stare at the speedometer, just need to keep your eyes on the road, make sure to pay attention to road safety, about each brake cycle, brake to almost 10-20km / h can be.

3. During these ten braking cycles, you cannot brake the vehicle to a stop, unless you wish to cause the brake pad material to blend into the brake discs, thus causing the brakes to vibrate.

4. The break-in method for new brake pads is to try to use split braking for braking, do not use hard braking before break-in.

5. After break-in, the brake pads still need to go through several hundred kilometers with the brake discs to achieve the best performance, at this time, be sure to drive carefully to prevent accidents.
