What does a brake lining do?

Jan 14, 2025

Brake linings have the following main functions:

► 1. Generate friction to achieve braking
The brake lining is a key component in the braking system. During the braking process, it is in close contact with the brake disc (disc brake) or drum (drum brake). When the driver depresses the brake pedal, the brake lining will be pressured to fit tightly on the brake disc or drum.

► 2. Stability in controlling braking effect
The coefficient of friction of the brake lining is designed to be stable over a certain range. This enables the braking system to provide relatively stable braking force at different speeds, different braking pressures and under different environmental conditions (e.g. wet and dry road surfaces).
High-quality brake linings can ensure that there is no sudden change in braking force during braking, avoiding unstable phenomena such as 'nodding' (excessive sinking of the front part of the vehicle) or side-slipping.

► 3. Aiding vehicle manoeuvrability
The performance of brake linings also affects vehicle handling. In some high-performance vehicles, the rapid response characteristics of brake linings allow the driver to control the speed of the vehicle more accurately, and when driving on a track or dodging emergencies, they can quickly adjust the speed of the vehicle to achieve flexible handling.

► 4. Protecting Brake System Components
As a component in direct contact with the brake disc or drum, the brake lining is subject to most of the friction and wear. Through its own wear and tear, it protects relatively expensive components such as discs and drums, and extends the service life of the entire braking system. If the brake lining is worn to a certain extent and not replaced in time, the metal backing plate may come into direct contact with the brake disc or drum, resulting in damage to these parts, such as scratches and deformation of the brake disc, which can be avoided by the brake lining under normal circumstances.
